Gustavsberg 'Birka' set no. 2, comprising two serving bowls
A set of two serving bowls, one larger and one smaller, in Gustavsberg's timeless 'Birka' pattern.
Stig Lindberg (1916-1982), one of Sweden's most influential designers and ceramicists, created the 'Birka' series for Gustavsberg in 1973. The beautiful simplicity and functionality of the series was influenced by the environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The creamy white porcelain with its tiny brown freckles and a grey-blue handpainted rim were inspired by the bark of the birch tree.
This series was manufactured until 1995, and was Gustavberg's most popular pattern. The clean lines and subtle texture in this series embodies timeless Swedish design at its finest, and ensure the bowls' seamless integration into a contemporary space. This set of two serving bowls is not only highly practical but also extremely beautiful.
Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition; there is some signs of use on the inside of the bowls, consistent with age and use.
The larger bowl measures 14 cm tall and 22 cm in diameter, and the smaller bowl measures 11 cm tall and 17 cm in diameter. Both have the Gustavsberg backstamp.
