Set of two Rörstrand 'Koka Blå' ceramic dishes, stamped numbers 37 and 38
A set of two ceramic dishes in the 'Koka Blå' pattern by Hertha Bengston (1917-1993) for Rörstrand Sweden. Bengston designed the highly popular 'Koka Blå' pattern in 1953, and it was produced from 1956 until 1988.
These dishes are ovenproof, so could be used for baking hot dishes, serving salads, or as a fruit or display bowl. Bengston has a fascinating biography, and was a leading figure in the Swedish ceramic design industry. After working for 23 years at Rörstrand where she developed a reputation as a determined and highly skilled artist, Bengston went on to design for Höganas, Rosenthal, and even collaborated with Strömbergshyttans Glassworks to design artistic glass pieces.
Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition; the larger dish no. 38 has a mark in the shape of a ring, probably from having another bowl stacked on top of it. Dish no. 37 measures 19 cm in diameter and is 7 cm tall, and dish no. 38 measures 22 cm in diameter and is 8 cm tall.
