Oiva Toikka for Nuutajärvi Notsjö 'Fauna' clear glass vessel
A beautifully intricate clear glass vessel from the 'Fauna' series, designed by Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) for Nuutajärvi Notsjö in 1970. Toikka is one of the most influential figures in Finnish design, and was a master of both ceramics and glass, having worked at Arabia Finland before moving Nuutajärvi glassworks, which was later subsumed by Iittala.
The well known 'Fauna' series features a relief pattern consisting of a variety of intricate animal shapes. This pattern was made by handblowing glass into a mould, and then using both cold and hot cutting techniques to trim the glass.
The 'Fauna' series was produced until 1985, and this particular piece was intended for use as a salad bowl. It would however make an excellent vase or plant pot, or simply a beautiful display piece.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition, and measures 16 cm tall and 16 cm in diameter (across the rim). It was sourced in Stockholm.
