Iittala 'Mariskooli' glass bowl in 'Koboltinsininen' cobalt blue

CHF 45.00

This stunning, collectible pressed glass 'Mariskooli' is from Finnish glass manufacturer Iittala. This shade of 'Koboltinsininen', cobalt blue is one of the five original colours of the pedestal bowls, and is a highly sought after colour. This colourway was manufactured in 1965, 1988-2006, and 2010-2011.

The Mariskooli were popularised by Armi Ratia, the founder of Finnish design house Marimekko, who used them at her famous garden parties. Dating this particular piece is difficult. Until 1980 the bowls did not carry any maker's mark, and between 1980 and 2003 they were marked simply with a Marimekko cloth label, which was easily removed during washing. It was not until 2004 that 'Marimekko' was indented into the base of the bowls. Judging by the central ring around the stem, which is thinner, in comparison to the later pieces which have thicker rings, I would imagine that this bowl is one of the 1965 originals.

This piece is in decent vintage condition. There are several scratches on the inside of the bowl, the largest being approximately 10 cm long, and there are several small chips on the underside of the base (all of which were difficult to capture by photograph). None of these flaws are immediately noticeable, until it is closely inspected. The bowl measures 15.5 cm tall and 12 cm in diameter.
