Set of eight glass 'Ultima Thule' bowls by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala
A fabulous set of eight small footed glass bowls from the 'Ultima Thule' series, by renowned Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985).
Wirkkala ranks among the most influential and prolific designers of the 20th Century, with his talents extending across a range of media, including plastic ketchup bottles, to metalware and furniture, banknotes and postage stamps, sculptures, and of course ceramics and glass. His designs were strongly inspired by nature, and it is said that his favourite place to stay was a hut so remote in the deep forests of middle Finland that prototypes had to be delivered to him by helicopter.
The 'Ultima Thule' series dates to the 1960s and is arguably Wirkkala's most popular glassware design, and certain pieces from this series are still made by Iittala due to its evergreen popularity. According to Iittala, Wirkkala spent close to one thousand hours with glassblowers developing the iconic melting ice pattern this series is known for.
This high-quality set is in excellent vintage condition. Each bowl measures 11.5 cm in diameter and 5 cm tall.
