Set of six 'Tsaikka' glasses by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala

CHF 95.00

A set of six 'Tsaikka' glasses designed by Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) for Iitala. Timo Sarpaneva's 'Tsaikka' glasses are a celebrated fusion of Scandinavian minimalism and traditional Russian tea culture, with a unique origin story rooted in an unexpected source: a Finnish zipper factory.

Designed in 1957, these glasses feature sleek, clear glass cradled within a delicately intricate metal holder, often made from brass or steel. The design is distinguished by its looping handle, a feature inspired by the metalwork capabilities of the zipper factory. Sarpaneva ingeniously repurposed metal plates left over from zipper production—perforated with small holes—that evoke the look of decorative lace, transforming industrial waste into elegant, functional art.

The name 'Tsaikka' is derived from the Russian word for tea, reflecting its cultural roots while reimagining the traditional tea glass for modern use. The metal holder not only adds elegance but also practical functionality, allowing users to handle hot beverages with ease. Over the years, these glasses have become design classics, beloved for their unique origin, timeless beauty, and versatility in serving tea, glögg, and other warm drinks.

They measure 8 cm tall and 6.75 cm in diameter, with a capacity of approximately 230 ml. Some still have their original Iittala label intact. They are in excellent vintage condition.

An additional five glasses are available, making 11 in total - please contact me if you would also like to purchase these.
