Framed floral still life, gouache on cardboard, signed A. Gasteiger
A stunning framed gouache on cardboard floral still life of a green vase overflowing with freshly cut flowers by noted German artist Anna Sophie Gasteiger (1877-1954).
Gasteiger is well known for her stunning floral still-life paintings, created with distinctive, lively brushstrokes and colourful and bright palette. I love how fresh this piece feels, with all the beautiful shades of green in the background, and the pops of colour provided by the blooms.
Gasteiger studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and exhibited her work regularly in Munich and Dresden. Gasteiger and her husband Mathias Gasteiger, a sculptor, built a home together in the Bavarian district of Holzhausen am Ammersee. Their home became an artists colony, and the couple hosted numerous exhibitions and festivals there. The house remains today, and is now a public museum - Künstlerhaus Gasteiger - of the couple's works.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition, and measures 43 cm x 33 cm including the original frame, and 40 cm x 30 cm without the frame. I have replaced the backing as the original one was in tatters.
