Framed aquarelle on paper of a Bernese mountain farmhouse, signed M. Uebersax 1955
This stunning framed aquarelle study of a Bernese mountain farmhouse, as indicated by the artist's handwritten note on the reverse, was painted by noted artist Maria Uebersax (1899-1989).
Uebersax was born in Belarus in 1899 and migrated to Switzerland in the early 20th Century, before studying art in Bern, Basel, and Hamburg. Uebersax was a mother to three children, and during this period of her life lived in Binningen, Basel-Landschaft, and painted as a hobby. It was not until her husband passed away in 1955 that she began painting in earnest, from a solitary valley in the Berner Oberland. This piece appears to be dated 1955, although the second last number is difficult to read. This makes it one of her earlier pieces, created very shortly after her husband's death.
It is a very expressive piece, and one can imagine that Uebersax channelled a great deal of grief and emotion into this work. It certainly has a sorrowful character, and yet the movement of the trees and presence of some brighter colours indicates that life is still present.
This beautiful piece of Swiss art history is in excellent vintage condition, and measures 51 cm x 66 cm including the original frame, and 35 cm x 50 cm excluding the original frame and mount.
